Can I Use My UK Prescription in Spain?

It is one of the most common questions we hear at the counter, usually from someone holding an NHS repeat prescription slip and looking hopeful. The short answer is no — but the full answer is more useful, because there are several straightforward ways to get your medication here.

Why is my UK prescription not valid?

Since Brexit, the UK is no longer part of the EU framework for recognising prescriptions. That means NHS and private UK prescriptions cannot be dispensed in Spanish pharmacies — not in ours, not anywhere in Spain. It is not a matter of pharmacy discretion; we are simply not legally able to dispense against them.

To obtain prescription medication in Spain, you need a prescription from a doctor licensed in Spain or another EU country.

What about EU prescriptions?

Paper cross-border prescriptions from EU countries are valid in Spain, provided they carry the full details required: the prescriber’s identification and contact information, and the medicine identified by its active ingredient (the INN name), with dosage and quantity.

Electronic prescriptions from other countries, on the other hand, generally cannot be dispensed in Spain yet — the cross-border e-prescription system is still being rolled out. The official overview is on europa.eu on prescriptions abroad.

So how do I get my medication here?

You have two practical routes:

• A local private doctor. There are English-speaking GPs in Nerja and Torre del Mar, both a short drive from El Morche. A consultation gets you a valid Spanish prescription, usually the same day.

Bring us your list — names change, molecules do not

Here is the part where we can genuinely save you time: many medicines have a different brand name in Spain but exactly the same active ingredient. What you know under a UK brand name almost certainly exists here under another.

Bring your repeat prescription list or, even better, the medication boxes themselves. We will identify the Spanish equivalent by active ingredient and dose, tell you whether it needs a prescription here, and point you to the fastest way to get one if it does.

One caution in both directions: some medicines that are over-the-counter in the UK require a prescription in Spain — and vice versa. Do not assume; ask first.

Plan ahead for your next trip

If you visit regularly, the smoothest approach is simple: travel with enough of your regular medication for the stay plus a margin, keep it in its original packaging, and carry your repeat prescription list. For longer stays, register with a local doctor early rather than when the last box runs out.
